Thanksgiving is typically a time when many of us over-indulge on the food front only to feel guilty, ashamed and annoyed afterwards when our pants don’t fit. But really, what’s a girl to do with so many tasty options on the table? Well, the answer depends on whether or not you’re an abstainer or a moderator.
Life coaches, nutritionists, and trainers are always touting the benefits of “moderation” — it’s better to have a little bit than nothing at all. But here’s the deal: that strategy only works for certain people. If you’re someone who rebels against strict rules, who can eat just one M&M and put the bag away and who hates absolutes, then you are definitely a moderator. Excellent. Go you. But if, like me, you are wired more “all or nothing” then moderation is simply another recipe for failure. I can not have just one spoonful of ice cream. I’ll eat the whole pint (or quart, or gallon…). It’s less stressful for me to abstain altogether than to try and limit myself.
Once you know what you are, you can adopt the strategy that works best for you. For instance, a moderator might try a small spoonful of mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie and stuffing while an abstainer might choose to skip the potatoes all together. The point is to not feel guilty about the way you are wired or judge someone else for being wired differently and just enjoy yourself with good friends, family and food.
